چکیده

The liver is one of the most complex and metabolically active organs in the body and performs many detoxification and protein synthetic functions that are essential to life. Extracorporeal bioartificial liver (BAL) systems consisting of functioning, viable hepatocytes may provide temporary support for patients with acute hepatic failure and save the lives of patients awaiting orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). In the past few years, we have seen several clinical studies testing the efficacy of BAL devices. These preliminary studies have provided some promising results, although current-generation liver-assist devices have not yet demonstrated sufficient efficacy and reliability for routine use. Some of the issues that the field of BAL development continues to wrestle with are: 1) how to support a large cell mass without substrate limitations so that cells function with maximum efficiency; 2) how to maintain high levels of stable long-term liver-specific function in an artificial (and potentially inhospitable) environment; and 3) how to minimize the priming volume (or dead space) that must be filled by blood or plasma from the patient. It is becoming clearer every day that a more fundamental understanding of the effect of environmental parameters on hepatocellular function, as well as host-BAL interactions, is necessary before the concept of BAL becomes a reality available at reasonable cost. This article describes the tissue-engineering principles and critical technologies that are relevant to the design of BAL devices, and provides future directions for the development of the next generation of BAL support systems.

Encapsulation of Cells to Feign Vascular Network for Liver Tissue Engineering

3D bio-artificial liver systems and transplantable devices are gaining significance due to the increase in number of patients with liver diseases. We demonstrate an ex-vivo system that mimics liver tissue and enhance the liver specific function with better viability. The proposed in vitro microchip takes advantage of micro contact printing and encapsulating process to achieve the goal. A multip...

Toward angiogenesis of implanted bio-artificial liver using scaffolds with type I collagen and adipose tissue-derived stem cells

BACKGROUNDS/AIMS Stem cell therapies for liver disease are being studied by many researchers worldwide, but scientific evidence to demonstrate the endocrinologic effects of implanted cells is insufficient, and it is unknown whether implanted cells can function as liver cells. Achieving angiogenesis, arguably the most important characteristic of the liver, is known to be quite difficult, and no ...

Artificial intelligence investigation of three silicates bioceramics-magnetite bio-nanocomposite: Hyperthermia and biomedical applications

Objective(s): Bioactive silicate ceramics have favorable features for applying as off-the-shelf bone and artificial tissue. Calcium silicate can enhance the generation of an immediate bond with host bone without an intervening rough surface in the bone layer. However, the silicate bioceramics have some drawback regarding their mechanical properties and chemical stabilities. Materials and Method...

Anti-cancer efficacy of biotinylated chitosan nanoparticles in liver cancer

The present study investigated the synthesis of biotinylated chitosan (Bio-CS) from chitosan using a nanomaterial skeleton with biotin and the successful targeting of the formulation in liver cancer cells. Bio-CS was validated by fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy and hydrogen-1 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Bio-CS and plasmid DNA were used to construct Bio-CS/plasmid DNA nano...

Simulation and experimental research on micro-channel for detecting cell status in bio-artificial liver.

BACKGROUND Bioartificial liver support system (BALSS) based on culturing hepatocytes is an important research field for the treatment of acute liver failure. It is necessary to monitor the state of liver cell functions during the treatment of BALSS in order to guide clinical treatment. OBJECTIVE To design a micro-channel chip to achieve flash mixing for timely detection of liver cell status i...

Effects of Lipotropic Products on Productive Performance, Liver Lipid and Enzymes Activity in Broiler Chickens

In a 42-d experiment, 576 one-day-old Vencobb 308 broiler chicks were used to investigate the effects of lecithin extract (0.5 g/kg), choline chloride 60% (1 g/kg) and Bio choline (1 g/kg) in diets of moderate and high energy in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement on performance and certain physiological traits in broiler chickens. The inclusion of Bio choline and lecithin extract in the diet signifi...
